Playa Chacala is a small fishing and tourist village on the Pacific coast of Mexico, about two hours north of Puerto Vallarta. About 300 people live here. There is public transportation to the nearest town, about 5 miles away. Las Varas has basic emergency medical services, dentists, a bank and ATM, a gas station, and so on.

Chacala has a wonderful beach. Sandy, with a gentle slope. Waves for body surfing, comfortable water temparature year around. Restaurants at the edge of the sandy beach, small groceries, internet, tourist shops, volunteer opportunties and Spanish lessons are all available. Local people are friendly and welcoming. There is fishing, access to a famous surfing beach 10 minutes away via launch. And day trips to street markets, petroglyphs and a swamp ride to visit crocodiles. Chacala is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, about two hours driving time north of Puerto Vallarta. It is easily accessible via bus, taxi, airport pick-up, or rental car. Majahua is a mini-resort at the south end of Chacala beach, It's very private, set back in the jungle and overlooking the water. Direct access to the ocean and to the beach. Majahua has six units very special units, all with private patios. And a small, gourmet restaurant and spa. Both are open to guests.Pelicano is set direclty on Chacala Beach.

Posada Sarahi has eight or nine rooms, with a variety of configurations. And a small restaurant. This is a visit-before-renting kind of place. Hot water in the evening only, and is a little funky.The owner, Ophelia, is very nice and friendly.
Berta's Estrella del Mar (below-2 photos) is brand new, with two lovely, large units, with large tiled baths. One unit has a patio with kitchan and a great view of the beach, which is less than a block away via a downhill path. The other unit has a kitchne inside and a small patio. Both units have great views from inside. Nicely decorated, ceiling fans, screened windows, tiled files,lots of space. Berta, the owner is wonderful. lots of fun, and very very competent. great landlady, understands English, speaks some. This is Casa Ana (and Augstine). Two nice upstairs units, suitable for large families. Covered patios, one block downhill to the beach. New, clean. basic. tiled with screened glass windows.

One unit has a brand new kitchen reached by going out the front door of the bedroom, and then into the door of the kitchen. Two separate spaces. These units are brand-new, tiled, screened windows with glass, ceiling fans, tiled floors. Basic and nice.
This is a very affordable unit, somewhere betwen $300US and $400 a month, depending on the season and lenght of stay. One of the best deals in Chacala. Next door, across the parking space, from the owners' tienda. Across from the Kinder and near the church. Great location for someone wanting to become involved in the community and to learn Spanish. This is Socorro's rental units (two photos). The photo is slightly out of date. There are four rentals here, but the two front units are the most popular. Each has a patio with nice little basic kitchen, and very basic bedroom/baths are right behind the patios. Very affordable and also available by the month. About $400US, depending on the season and the length of stay. The landlady, and her family are very nice and friendly. No English, but the nearby neighbors do speak English, if needed.
